This Arctic Roll and Draw drawing game turns drawing practice into a classroom game. Students roll a die to choose each feature of their animal, so every student ends up with a unique Arctic animal drawing. It works well for winter art lessons, Arctic animal units, science connections and creative drawing practice.

Roll and Draw activities are like directed drawings, but more interactive. Instead of everyone drawing the same picture, students build their drawings piece by piece through chance and their own choices, which encourages creative thinking, experimentation, drawing confidence, problem solving and visual decision making.

HOW TO USE IT

Students start with a Roll and Draw chart that shows several drawing choices for each part of the animal. They roll a die, use the feature that matches the number, and keep rolling for each step until the animal is complete. Then they color, paint or decorate it with the materials you choose. Because each roll gives a different combination, students can repeat the activity and get a new result every time.

It needs almost no prep and works with crayons, colored pencils, markers, watercolor, oil pastels, tempera paint or mixed media. Use the pages for sub plans, art centers, early finishers, sketchbook glue-ins or a winter Arctic drawing booklet, in elementary art, classroom or homeschool settings.
