What is the red cord in the window? Join Eli, Maya and Mum as they read about Rahab and the two men Joshua secretly sends to look at Jericho. The men come to Rahab’s house in the city wall. When the king sends for them, Rahab hides them under flax on her roof and says that they have gone. The retelling makes clear that her statement is not true.

Rahab recognises Israel’s God and asks for her family’s lives to be spared. The men promise kindness and faithfulness, with conditions: their mission must remain secret, the scarlet line must mark the window, and the household must gather and remain inside when Israel comes. Rahab helps the men escape. They hide in the hills for three days, return across the Jordan and report to Joshua. Rahab ties the cord in her window; her family’s later rescue is not shown as completed in this book.

Original-series-style illustrations accompany this selected retelling. No battle, weapon, injury or climbing action is illustrated. Separate fictional family scenes make room for questions about danger. Mum reassures Maya that she can tell a caring grown-up if she feels frightened or unsafe. The children share drawings and can pause whenever they need.

READING TOGETHER

Preview this story of spies, hiding, an untrue statement, secrecy and escape in a conquest setting. It concerns a promise to preserve lives in danger. Let children pause, ask questions or choose another story. The rope escape is told in words, while the illustration shows the two adult men safely on the ground afterwards.

Grown-up notes explain the conditions of the promise, distinguish the escape rope from the scarlet sign and identify the later rescue in Joshua 6. Joshua 2:1 identifies Rahab as a prostitute; her occupation is not explored in the child narrative. This is a selected retelling rather than the entire passage.

The ancient mission’s secrecy is not presented as a rule for children. Children can tell a trusted grown-up about anything frightening, unsafe or confusing and keep telling until someone listens. They are not responsible for rescuing adults. The red cord is an agreed sign in this account, not a general guarantee of safety.

Children can speak, point, draw, use communication aids or simply listen. Prayer and activities are invitations, not requirements. Both activities use paper and suitable crayons with a grown-up. Do not copy the escape, tie cords to real windows, climb or recreate hiding games. My Story Window is a drawing activity carried out while seated or standing on the floor; no rope, string or real window is needed.

Modern scenes are fictional; ancient settings and the characters’ appearance are imaginative. AI-assisted illustrations selected and reviewed for this edition.
