In Meridian, every adult’s resilience is measured through five officially recognized bonds. Those classifications help determine who can enter a shelter, collect a child, receive medical information, or be trusted during an emergency.

On recalibration day, thousands of long-deferred relationships fail at once, sending the Narrows below 4.2—the minimum the city has trusted for seventy years.

Municipal forecaster Rebecca Pressman is sent to discover why the district is not collapsing as predicted. 

What she finds is Tyler Knots: a suspended building superintendent, an unauthorized rooftop shelter, and a web of neighbors quietly moving food, medicine, children, keys, and responsibility through routes no official system can see.

As Meridian’s precise categories begin producing dangerous consequences, Rebecca must decide whether to protect the system she has spent her career defending—or admit that it has confused the record of care with care itself.

Working beside Tyler forces another reckoning: showing up during a crisis is not the same as staying when nothing needs to be fixed. 

BELOW 4.2 is a character-driven, near-future speculative thriller about data ethics, loneliness, institutional power, community care, and a restrained slow-burn relationship between two capable adults learning how to remain.
