ABOMEY — Daughters of War

The Audiobook

By award-winning historical fiction author Christopher Whittaker

They were warriors. They were daughters. They were the last line of defence for a kingdom.

In the heart of West Africa, an extraordinary army of women stood against the advancing forces of French colonial conquest. Feared by their enemies, fiercely loyal to their kingdom, and bound together by courage and sacrifice, they were the Agojie — the legendary women warriors of Dahomey.

ABOMEY — Daughters of War brings their remarkable story to life in a gripping historical novel of loyalty, friendship, love and the devastating human cost of war.

Opening in a small classroom in Abomey in 1930 and then moving to the bloody battlefields of 1890 to the burning of Abomey in 1892, follow Sika, Afi, Kemi and their fellow warriors as they confront an enemy armed with modern weapons and an overwhelming determination to conquer.

Decades later, an ageing warrior shares her memories with her grandchildren, ensuring that the courage and sacrifice of those who fought beside her will never be forgotten.

Based on historical events, this is more than a story of warfare. It is a tribute to the women who fought, suffered and died defending their homeland.

Their kingdom would fall. Their courage would endure. Their story deserves to be heard.
