JUDGING – Judge Righteous Judgment by Bro H
“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” “You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, And then you can see clearly To remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.” [Verse 1] The modern pulpit seized two words And raised them like a shield: “Don’t judge”—whenever sin is named, Whenever lies are revealed. Yet within that very chapter, The Lord commands us to beware; False prophets come in sheep’s clothing While ravening wolves are hiding there. A tree is known by what it bears; Its fruit must be examined. You cannot prove what things are good If nothing may be questioned. [Chorus] Judge righteous judgment, Not appearance, fear, or pride; Let the Word define the standard, Let the facts be fully tried. Judge yourself beneath the measure You would place upon your brother; Let correction work in mercy— Gain your brother; do not crush him. [Verse 2] Judgment is not condemnation; The words are not the same. Judgment hears and weighs a matter; Condemnation follows proven guilt. When a cause comes between brothers, The hearing must not start with guilt; Let the law be opened plainly, Let the case be fully built. Were there witnesses to prove it? Was the charge examined well? No rumor becomes evidence, No suspicion proves the tale. [Verse 3] The Lord did not leave the brother blinded With the speck still in his sight; He rebuked the present hypocrite Who would not face his own wrong first. Lay your own great beam before you; Bring your conduct to the Word. Do not excuse the sin within you While condemning what you heard. Yet the man who fell and turned again, Who learned the bitter cost, May warn another from the road Upon which he once was lost. [Verse 4] Do not whisper hidden motives That no witness can establish; Judge the visible words and conduct, Test the doctrine and the fruit. Do not bend the law for friendship; Do not sharpen it for foes. Do not favor one for poverty, Or honor costly clothes. Inquire, make search, ask diligently; Hear the small as well as great. Do not take the gift that blinds you, For the judgment belongs to God. [Verse 5] When a brother sins against you, Go and tell him privately; If he hears, you have not crushed him— You have gained him faithfully. If he will not hear, take witnesses; Let every word be proved. Then bring the matter to the assembly If correction is refused. Restore the fallen in a meek spirit, Considering yourself with care; But open sin cannot be covered By compassion falsely named. [Bridge] Love does not call evil good. Mercy does not abolish truth. Humility does not forbid discernment. Forgiveness does not erase repentance. The warning against false judgment Never cancels Christ’s command: “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” [Verse 6] Now the sinner is protected, While the watchman stands accused; The man who names the transgression Is the one the church condemns. Acceptance swallowed repentance; Love was severed from the truth. The wolf was sheltered near the pulpit, While the shepherd was reproved. But Israel must learn the law again That she has counted strange; Restore the judges as at first, Let truth and peace return. [Final Chorus] Judge righteous judgment, Not appearance, fear, or pride; Let the Word define the standard, Let the facts be fully tried. Judge yourself beneath the measure You would place upon your brother; Let correction work in mercy— Gain your brother, do not crush him. Judge righteous judgment; Let justice fill the gate. Faithful and True is coming, And His Word remains the weight. [Outro] The saints must judge the smallest matters, Guard the flock and help the brother; Final vengeance rests with The Lord— We do not seize His throne. “Do not judge according to appearance. but judge righteous judgment.”
