Before kids can blend sounds together to read words, they first need to be able to hear the individual sounds in those words.

In this activity we worked on identifying the first sound in a word. We started by reviewing the letters and the sounds they represent, then used this game to practice connecting those sounds to words.

The student rolled the die, identified the letter and its sound, and then searched for a picture that began with that same sound.

This builds phonemic awareness while reinforcing the connection between sounds and letters, an important foundation for both reading and spelling.

And of course, turning the practice into a game makes all that repetition a little more fun! 🎲📚🌱
