I suffered from PMDD for over a decade, stuck on antidepressants and feeling terrified of the anxiety and intrusive thoughts that would strike just before my period.
I became a menstrual cycle coach after healing my symptoms through Menstrual Cycle Awareness while completing the Red School's Menstruality Leadership Training in 2020, where I was directly mentored by Alexandra Pope and Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer. Absolutely - this is all about how to understand what you need at different times of the month. The knowledge and application of it has helped many women to reduce symptoms and bring balance back to their lives.
You are absolutely welcome! You can still work with your cycle as it is. Be aware of the notion that paying attention to your cycle can help to regulate it, or at the very least, help you to see the pattern in the cycle you do have.
While on hormonal contraception such as the pill, or implants, injections or patches, you are not having a 'normal' menstrual cycle. The 'bleed' you have on these isn't real menstrual blood but rather a withdrawal from the drug.
Of course you may be using the pill for contraception or to manage menstrual problems. While it's vital you have reliable contraception and a means to manage your suffering, I believe that to shut down the important natural cycle with highly potent, synthetic hormones potentially damages your body. And you won't be able to access the extraordinary powers of the cycle that I teach in this course.
So what to do? It's important to take time to feel into what is right for you. Taking this course will give you the full picture of your experience as a woman and help you awaken to your cyclical rhythms. It may even make you want to change your current contraceptive choices.
In any case, I suggest to track your pill-induced cycle or track the moon cycle (if using a different hormonal contraception). It's not the same as a real menstrual cycle but it will be useful to become aware of your pill-induced cycle and to come into relationship with how you feel each day physically and emotionally. While this course does not focus primarily on Menopause (although we do touch on it) you are absolutely welcome. It will be crucial for you to recover the story of your cycling years in order to prepare for Menopause.
In terms of Perimenopause; I must be clear that I am speaking to the stage of right before our cycles stop completely.
This can vary from woman to woman and it is important to know that there is another stage before perimenopause called The Quickening that happens usually in the 40s when the premenstrual side of life feels more apparent.
Some women believe they are in perimenopause when it is actually The Quickening. This course is certaintly vital for anyone in The Quickening.
RE: tracking - If your cycle is a little erratic, begin to track it anyway and if the bleed hasn't come for a long time, you can follow the moon cycle phases if you feel the need for some sort of anchor.
If you have no cycle at all and you are not pregnant, breastfeeding or perimenopausal, you are absolutely welcome to take this course. You can begin tracking the moon cycle when I talk about tracking. This is where you become aware of what day the moon is in and the cyclical process of the lunar month. The practice of paying attention to your cycle and learning in this way (combined with meeting with other cycling women once a month, and trying other natural remedies) may even entice your cycle back.
This course is for all cyclical beings from 18yr+ who menstruate and want to live in tune with your cycle. Your relationship to your menstrual cycle may be more complex. I hope you will engage with the material here and share with me what it means to you.
