Communal Grounds: A Lenten Lens on Mutual Care
SERIES SYNOPSIS
Communal Grounds is a Christ-centered Lenten worship series that invites congregations to practice faith as something formed together, not alone.
Across Lent, Holy Week, and Easter, this series explores how Jesus shapes communities of care through shared responsibility, embodied love, humility, and courage. Rather than treating Lent as a solitary spiritual project, Communal Grounds centers on the truth that Christian formation happens on common ground we tend together.
This series is not about political activism or ideological conformity. It is about practicing the kinds of communal habits that allow real people to flourish, especially when the world feels fractured, exhausting, or unsafe.
THEOLOGICAL CENTER
At its heart, Communal Grounds is grounded in the life and ministry of Jesus, with one primary scripture per service. The series quietly draws on principles found in traditions of mutual aid—shared responsibility, dignity over charity, presence without control—not as an agenda, but as practices that echo the way Jesus formed community.
As Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in Life Together,
Christian community is not an ideal we have to realize, but rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate.
This series invites congregations to participate in that reality—honestly, imperfectly, and together.
PASTORAL & PRACTICAL ORIENTATION
Communal Grounds is:
- Christ-centered and scripture-rooted
- Trauma-aware, with consent-based language and clear permission to adapt
- Bold without being punitive, naming harm while resisting shame
- Practice-forward, emphasizing embodied habits over abstract conclusions
The goal is not to mobilize congregations toward a cause, but to form communities capable of care—within worship, within relationships, and within the shared life of faith.
WHO THIS SERIES IS FOR
This series is especially suited for:
- Progressive or justice-minded congregations
- Pastors and worship leaders navigating fatigue, polarization, or burnout
- Churches seeking depth without overproduction
- Communities ready to move beyond charity toward shared responsibility
You do not need extensive staff, specialized training, or a large budget to use this series well. All materials are modular. Use what serves your context. Set aside the rest without guilt. Communal Grounds was developed with limited resources in mind, using open-source typefaces, a simple color palette with single black & white versions available, and modular, scalable elements for different sizes of groups (and varying energy levels).
