1 - Living Tide

This piece welcomes chaos while preserving the peace and comfort that exist around it. Calming colors surround expressive features, as emotion takes precedence over realism. Fleeting faces and forms wander across the canvas. Color, imagination, and spontaneity create a rhapsodic landscape of interconnected voices, memories, and feelings. 

2 - Soprano

An opera singer caught between structure and expression. Her face is constructed from cubist planes and angular geometry, while her body unwinds in bold, fluid gestures. Expressive movement overtakes rigid construction, breaking through the constraints of form and creating a portrait of formality versus fragmentation, order versus flow, discipline and release.

3 - Woman Reading Book

An elegant woman reads quietly in a museum, her unfinished portrait reflecting the stages of a romance that remains unrealized. Her face has been intentionally obscured, leaving her without defining features and preserving her as a memory, possibility, and proof that I am still capable of admiration.

4 - Villagescape by Dusk

Familiar forms emerge from bold, vibrant colors against a dark sky, constructing an abstracted village landscape while much of the scene remains hidden in shadow. The result is a quiet, mysterious atmosphere that feels both familiar and dreamlike.

5- Self Portrait II

A web of rigid, restless lines converges to form a fragmented self-portrait. Built from competing identities struggling to become one, the work represents the tension, uncertainty, and chaos of understanding myself. 

Blake Knisely is a multidisciplinary artist based in Independence, Missouri, working primarily in acrylic paint. With a background in neuroscience and academia, he has worked as a researcher in multiple medical centers around Kansas City and served as instructor of psychopathology in New Haven, Ct. Having lived most of his life in KC, his previous homes also include Las Vegas and Düsseldorf, Germany. Beyond his love for learning, teaching, and creating, Knisely is an avid enthusiast of classical music.

In a shift from academia, Knisely has turned to art as a means of rediscovering his identity and redefining his place in the world.

My practice emphasizes abstraction and expression around themes of identity, intense emotion, and the mechanisms by which these phenomena arise. I embrace emotional undercurrents and complex cognitive landscapes to explore the structural integrity of the human psyche. The elements of my visual language are shaped by personal experiences and informed by my previous career, where I so desperately sought to understand them. This depth of inquiry brings both intellectual rigor and emotional resonance to my art, often in a contesting way, demonstrating the power of distorted internal realities in shaping our understanding of the world around us. In chaos and ambiguity, my work demonstrates and encourages a pursuit of finding meaning and familiarity in a seemingly meaningless and unfamiliar world.
