Cleveland in January is a grey, miserable bitch.

Roy sits in a plastic chair that squeaks every time he shifts. The office smells like antiseptic and bad news, while fluorescent lights hum overhead, reflecting off a dozen diplomas he can’t be bothered to read. Dr. Shephard’s face is built like a funeral director’s, heavily composed and measured, already set for the worst like the man practices that look in the mirror every morning.

“Mr. Harris.” The doctor folds his hands over a manila folder thick enough to choke on. “I want to review your latest imaging results with you.”
