Swans are often regarded as symbols of love and loyalty because they mate for life. When a Swan loses its mate however, it may withdraw completely. It will isolate itself, refuse to eat, and become disheveled. In some accounts, a grieving swan will take flight one final time, rising to an extraordinary height before surrendering itself to a final, and fatal, descent.
