Meteora Kalambaka, in the prefecture of Trikala in Thessaly

A few kilometers northwest of the Thessalian plain, in the city of Kalambaka, lies one of the most impressive landscapes in Greece, the Meteora rocks. Many centuries ago, these huge rocks were formed, which exceed 600 meters in height and in which hermits found refuge, founding one of the most important monastic communities in Greece. Meteora is a unique place and a top travel destination, because it is a complex of enormous Paleolithic rocks and Byzantine monasteries on their steep peaks with unique relics and frescoes. The view of the towering dark-colored rocks is awe-inspiring. Nestled on their peaks and in their caves since the 11th century, the monasteries of Meteora have been standing. With ropes, nets or their bare hands, the monks established a centuries-old tradition: climbing.
