The Night We Go Home

Short Story - Literary Non-Fiction
Released: September 19, 2022 - Length: 4 pages (1069 words)

"What they don't tell you is that the last couple of weeks at war are among the worst. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You can see it. You can taste it. You can almost smell it over the burning plastics and tires. You might just make it home."

The wind carried a gentle breeze on the air currents of the high desert on that mid-summer night. It was a small relief, and a fleeting one at that. It softly caressed our faces, gritty with sweat and sand. This was the night we’d been waiting for. This was the night we’d finally leave Afghanistan.

Based on the author's personal deployment experience leaving Afghanistan in 2010 during Operation Enduring Freedom.
