WHAT IS DYSTHYMIA? Dysthymia, also called persistent depressive disorder (PDD), is a continuous and long-term form of depression. Dysthymia is very similar to major depressive disorder in its presentation and symptoms, the major difference is that dysthymia occurs continuously for at least 2 years. Symptoms of dysthymia can also be less obvious and severe than in the acute stages of major depressive disorder, and as such, may at times be overlooked and missed.

SYMPTOMS OF DYSTHYMIA Common symptoms include: Continuous experience of depressed mood. Low energy or fatigue. Change in appetite. Changes in sleep patterns. Feelings of hopelessness. Challenges with concentration or difficulties in making decisions. Low self-esteem and confidence.

CAUSES OF DYSTHYMIA Mood disorders do not discriminate, and anyone can develop depression or dysthymia. There are, however, some groups that are more vulnerable to developing dysthymia. These include: Having a relative, such as a parent or sibling, with a history of a depressive disorder. Having been exposed to traumatic events or major and upsetting life challenges. Individuals with other diagnosed mental health conditions.

This workbook is designed to give tools to help with the symptoms of Dysthymia. IT IS NOT TREATMENT.
