It was a sunny morning as John rushed out the door to catch his bus. He had overslept and was already running late for his first day back at CalTech after the summer break. In his haste, he nearly collided with his mother in the front hall. "Morning, Mom!" he mumbled hastily as he brushed past her.

"Hold on a moment!" Martha called out. "Don't you want some breakfast? I made your favorite - blueberry waffles."

John paused, one hand on the doorknob. "Sorry, no time. Gotta run. See you tonight!" And with that, he was out the door and gone, leaving his mother to sigh and wipe her floury hands on her apron.

Martha finished clearing up the kitchen, humming to herself, when the doorbell rang. "Coming!" She made her way to the front door, hoping it wasn't one of those tedious Encyclopedia salesmen again.

She opened the door to find a well-dressed man standing on the porch, holding a slim briefcase. "Good day, ma'am. I'm Mr. Blackwell from the Dynatech Corporation. We've been working on an exciting new project and your son John has been selected to be our chief field tester for-"

"Oh, you must be the people he's been working for! Come in, come in," Martha invited, ushering the man inside. "Can I offer you some coffee?"

"Thank you, that would be lovely," Mr. Blackwell replied, following her into the living room. "John has been a most valued asset to our team. You must be very proud."

Martha beamed at the compliment as she brought in the coffee. "I certainly am! He's the smartest boy I know. What's this project he's working on?"

Mr. Blackwell leaned forward. "I'm afraid that's still classified at this point. But I can tell you it has the potential to revolutionize the world. John will be able to give you all the details later, I'm sure." He checked his watch. "Oh dear, is that the time? I'll be off. Thank you for the hospitality."

With that, he rose and made his way to the door. "By the way, I'm terribly sorry to inform you, but there was an...accident at the lab this morning involving the project. A ray instrument was discharged prematurely. It seems to have shrunk John down to a tiny size. We're doing everything we can..."

"What?! Shrunk my boy?! Oh my God!" Martha clutched the coffee mug so hard her knuckles turned white. Horrific visions flashed through her mind - John splattered underfoot, crushed by some giant animal...

Mr. Blackwell held up a calming hand. "Please, try not to worry too much. We have the situation under control. Our people are bringing him home now. He'll be perfectly safe."

Martha paced the living room like a caged lion, her mind churning with worry and dark imaginings. An hour passed, then two. Finally, she heard a car pull into the driveway.

She flung open the front door to see John, naked and shrunken down to about an inch tall, sitting in the palm of one of Mr. Blackwell's men. "John! Oh Baby! Are you alright?"

"Mom! I'm fine, don't worry," he called up, waving. "It's just temporary. They're working on reversing it now."

Martha's eyes brimmed with tears of relief. "Oh thank God." She looked at Mr. Blackwell's assistant. "How can we keep him safe until then? He's so...vulnerable like that."

"Don't fret, ma'am. We've thought of that." The man handed her a small Plexiglas habitat, like a hamster cage. "Here, this will give him a safe environment. And these," he offered a pair of tweezers and a t-shirt, "are for you to use to lift and transport him."

"I...I don't know how to do this," Martha said uncertainly, eyeing the tweezers. Her son looked so fragile, like a tiny doll. She was terrified of dropping him.

"You'll be fine. Just be careful. The lab will call as soon as we have an update." With that, Mr. Blackwell and his assistant took their leave, leaving Martha alone with her pint-sized boy.

She carried John's cage to the kitchen table and peered in at him. "Where do you want to eat, honey? I can't exactly lay a regular place for you."

John looked up and grinned. "The counter's fine, Mom. I'm starved. Any of those waffles left?"
