My Safety Plan: If Someone Unsafe Comes to My Home

A child-friendly safety-planning resource for safeguarding professionals

Helping children understand what they can do to seek help when they feel unsafe.

This visually engaging, child-centred safety plan has been designed to support professionals working with children who may be at risk if an unsafe person comes to their home.

Using clear language, gentle illustrations and structured prompts, it helps children identify safe places, trusted adults and practical ways to seek help.

What’s included?

  • Prompts to help children think about what they can do if someone unsafe arrives.
  • Space to identify a safe place, where appropriate.
  • Sections to record trusted adults and their contact details.
  • Guidance on seeking urgent help.
  • Reminders that children are not responsible for confronting unsafe people or making them leave.
  • Space for children to express what helps them feel safer.

Who is it for?

This resource may be useful for:

  • Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and Deputy DSLs.
  • Social workers and family support practitioners.
  • Pastoral and safeguarding teams.
  • Other professionals supporting children with individual safety needs.

How can it be used?

Complete the plan collaboratively with the child, using language and prompts appropriate to their age, understanding and communication needs.

The plan should be personalised to the child’s circumstances and used alongside appropriate adult-led safeguarding arrangements. It is not a substitute for a risk assessment, an individual safeguarding plan or emergency intervention where required.
