The House that Hands Out Candy
THE HOUSE THAT HANDS OUT CANDY
A Halloween Horror Short Story
By J.L. Goard
Every Halloween, the house gives out candy. There's only one rule. Take one. Never take two.
On Briar Lane, Halloween is more than costumes, decorations, and trick-or-treating.
It's a tradition.
And at the end of the street stands a little yellow house that everyone knows about—but no one seems willing to explain.
Its porch glows with warm lights. Pumpkins line the steps. An enormous copper bowl overflows with candy wrapped in black paper and tied with orange string.
Beside the door hangs a simple wooden sign.
TAKE ONE. LEAVE THE REST.
When Mara Bennett and her fourteen-year-old daughter, Ellie, move to Briar Lane just days before Halloween, the neighborhood seems almost too perfect.
Friendly neighbors. Beautiful homes. Charming traditions.
But everyone has the same warning.
Only take one piece of candy.
Mara dismisses the strange rule as a harmless neighborhood superstition.
Until Halloween night.
Until the knocking begins.
Three soft taps from somewhere inside their home.
A door appears in a hallway where no door has ever existed.
And from the other side comes a voice that sounds exactly like someone Mara loves.
Someone who is already standing beside her.
Now Mara must confront a terrifying possibility.
The stories about the candy house weren't meant to frighten children.
They were meant to keep them alive.
Because the house doesn't give away candy for free.
And when you take more than you're offered, something comes to collect.
