Autism and Suicide: Prevention, Assessment, and Support (2 CEs)
Risk assessment and suicidal ideation are often overlooked in clinical training programs. What little information is provided tends to center provider liability over the well-being of the client. Involuntary hospitalizations can cause more harm than good and can increase risk for future suicide behaviors.
Furthermore, existing risk assessment measures are developed without consideration for the needs and communication style of autistic clients. The autistic community experiences suicidal ideation and dies from suicide at a higher rate than the rest of the population. Providers who support this population must be appropriately trained in identifying risk and providing treatment for suicidal ideation, with interventions and measures tailored to this population.
This training will provide you with an understanding of suicide in the autistic community, neurodiversity-affirming and autism specific risk assessments, and appropriate care for autistic clients experiencing suicidal ideation.
