Mystical and otherworldly the Northern Lights have captured our imagination down through the centuries. I hope knitting these mitts will remind you of the beautiful, strange, and vast universe just above our heads, and, if you have been lucky enough to see the northern lights in person, I hope they will remind you of that experience.

Method: These stranded colorwork fingerless mitts are knit in the round from the cuff down. They have a thumb gusset and can be worked in two or more contrasting colors.
These gloves can be knitted on dpns, by magic loop, or on a short circular (but you will still need dpns for the thumbs).
Please note the colorwork design in this pattern is charted not written out. You need to be prepared to read and work from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design.
Size: This pattern is written in 3 sizes referred to throughout the pattern as S, M, and L. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are color coded.
Size S: Hand circumference 7” (18cm)
Size M: Hand circumference 7.75” (19.75cm)
Size L: Hand circumference 8.5” (21.5cm)
Yarn: Yarn kits for this pattern containing all four colors pictured are available from SweetPeaYarns on Etsy
These kits contain plenty of yarn to knit any size of mitt at the specified gauge and a printed copy of this pattern. The yarn is a 4 ply 100% British wool which Emma has hand dyed especially for this project! Yarn quantities in the kits are as follows:
MC – Approx. 50g
CC1 – Approx. 15g
CC2 – Approx. 15g
CC3 – Approx. 15g
If you are not using a kit you can use any 4 ply (fingering) yarn that you like and with which you can get tension/ gauge. You will need a dark color for your main color and three lighter contrasting colors.
Please note I do not recommend using yarns with a high cotton content as cotton doesn’t stretch as much as other fibers and this will affect the fit of your gloves.
Needles: 3mm dpns or size needed for gauge (optional short circular/ long circular for magic loop for knitting the hand, you will still need dpns to work the thumbs).
2.5mm dpns (optional short circular/ long circular for magic loop for knitting ribbing).
Other Materials: 3 Stitch Markers
Waste yarn/ dental floss as preferred
Tape Measure
Scissors
Darning needle for sewing in ends
