Indie Burgh Yarn Crawl 2015 Socks - PDF Knitting Pattern
The annual Indie Burgh Yarn Crawl is upon us! It’s time to visit our favourite 3 indie yarn shops in Edinburgh, Scotland. For the 2nd year in a row, I was asked to design a pair of socks to celebrate the occasion. I was inspired by the Forth Bridge which is an iconic 1.6 mile long cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth. It connects Edinburgh, Inchgarvie, and Fife, Scotland.
About the socks - The cantilever design of the bridge inspired me to recreate it in this sock pattern. The design element is made up of only knits and purls. It is an easily memorisable 11 rows that is repeated on the top of the foot and the front of the leg. The bottom of the foot and the back of the leg are in stockinette stitch which makes it easy to knit on a yarn crawl, while knitting in public, and while at knit night with friends! In order to make it accessible for any knitter, I designed the pattern in both toe up and cuff down versions. Happy Knitting!

Yarn weight: Fingering (14 wpi)
Gauge: 30 stitches and 48 rows = 4 inchesin Stockinette Stitch
Needle size: US 1½ - 2.5 mm
Yardage: 399 yards (365 m)
Sizes available: 56 st sock fits a Women’s Small foot, 64 st sock fits a Women’s Medium foot, and 72 st sock fits a Women’s Large foot
These socks are knit using the magic loop method (although the purchaser could easily adapt it for two circulars or double points).
Judy’s Magic Cast On and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off are used in this pattern for the toe up version.
German Twisted Cast On and the Kitchener Stitch are used in this pattern for the cuff down version.
For the toe up version, the knitter needs to be comfortable with the following techniques: knit, purl, Ktbl, M1R, M1L, and w+t (short rows). Instructions for all these techniques are included in the pattern.
For the cuff down version, the knitter needs to be comfortable with the following techniques: knit, purl, M1R, M1L, ssk, k2tog, and w+t (short rows). Instructions for all these techniques are included in the pattern.
This pattern includes instructions in both written and chart forms for 56 stitch, 64 stitch, and 72 stitch socks. In addition, a video tutorial for the shadow wrap technique of W+T for short rows has been recorded by the designer.
