Afonso Duarte – Orchestral Suite is an 18‑minute symphonic work derived from the original cantata, preserving all thematic material while presenting it in a purely instrumental form. Commissioned by the Associação Poeta Afonso Duarte with the support of the Municipality of Montemor‑o‑Velho, the suite pays tribute to the poet through five contrasting movements — Inscrição, Búzio do Mar, Horas de Saudade, Monte‑Mor and Rosas e Cantigas. Each movement reflects a different stage of Afonso Duarte’s life, offering lyrical passages, rhythmic vitality and rich orchestral colours. With a medium‑high level of difficulty, this suite is ideal for concert programmes seeking a narrative‑driven, expressive and culturally significant work that highlights the depth and versatility of contemporary Portuguese symphonic writing.
