Reed Making Video #1
Watch Me Make a Reed — Start to Finish
Welcome to my first reed-making video!
In this video, I take you through the process of making a reed for myself, from beginning to end. Rather than presenting this as a formal reed-making class, I wanted to give you an inside look at how I actually work at my reed desk—what I notice, what I adjust, and how I make decisions as the reed develops.
You’ll get to see my personal process in real time, including:
- How I approach the initial scrape
- What I’m looking and listening for along the way
- How I balance different areas of the reed
- The adjustments I make as the reed begins to respond
- How I evaluate the finished reed and decide what still needs work
One of the things I love about reed making is that no two pieces of cane behave exactly the same way. There isn’t always one measurement or one scrape that produces the perfect result. A large part of reed making is learning how to recognize what the reed is giving you and deciding what to do next.
That’s what I hope you can take away from this video.
This is also my first video product, and I plan to continue sharing more of my personal reed-making, practicing, and oboe-playing process in the future.
If you’ve ever wondered, “What does Joo Bin actually do when he sits down and makes a reed for himself?” — this is your chance to sit at the reed desk with me.
For educational purposes. Individual results will vary depending on cane, equipment, setup, instrument, and personal playing preferences.
