For more than 13 years, Schmid’s Huhn has been forging an uncompromising ensemble sound at the junction of advanced jazz, composed structure, and free improvisation. Four distinctive voices from Germany’s jazz and improvisation scene channel post-bop energy, cool-jazz transparency, and con- temporary improvisation into music of eruptive density and sharply defined form.

With their fourth album Hindemith Abstractions (2026), the band turns its focus to Paul Hindemith and his work “Des kleinen Elektromusikers Lieblinge” for three Trautoniums. The resulting suite, “The Little Jazz Musicians’ Favorites”, treats Hindemith’s material as a point of departure for a decisive transformation: melodic cells, intervallic structures, and formal thinking are dismantled, condensed, and reshaped. The album is completed by “Reflections on Hindemith”, a fully free improvisational work that negotiates structure, energy, and collective risk in real time.
