Gloster Hill (for Brass Band) - PRINTED

PRINTED VERSION. Written for Forest of Dean Brass and the Imjin River Memorial Fund, for their fundraising concert at All Saints Church in Viney Hill on 20th September 2025.

The Battle of the Imjin River, April 1951, was one of the defining moments of the Korean War. Outnumbered by more than ten to one, the Gloucestershire Regiment — the “Glorious Glosters” — fought with extraordinary bravery, holding their positions for three days against overwhelming Chinese forces. Their stand delayed the enemy advance long enough to safeguard Seoul and change the course of the battle. Many were killed or captured, but their determination and sacrifice left an enduring mark on both British and South Korean history, creating a bond that endures to this day.

The music begins in a dark, battle-like style before moving into a brighter, celebratory mood. Fragments of the Korean folk song “Imjin River” appear throughout in various forms, with the full melody being heard for the first time at figure D in the Horn section, linking the music to the Glosters’ courage and lasting legacy.
