This Spring Cartoon Grid Drawing resource gives students in grades 1 to 4 a simple, structured way to build drawing confidence. Students copy a spring cartoon one square at a time from the example grid into the blank grid beside it, which helps them slow down, focus and feel successful.

The cartoon images are drawn by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic) and include flowers, birds, butterflies, frogs, nests and umbrellas. Along the way students build observation skills, fine motor control, hand-eye coordination and attention to detail. It suits classroom teachers, art teachers, substitute teachers and homeschool families.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for spring art lessons, early finishers, art centers, sub plans, morning work, homeschool art or fine motor practice. They work as a quiet independent activity, a guided lesson, or a booklet students work through over time.

Working square by square takes away the pressure of drawing a whole image at once. Students notice lines, shapes and spacing more clearly, which helps those who say they “can’t draw” get started.
