This St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Art Lesson with Reading and Writing Activities is a cross-curricular March project that brings together visual art, reading comprehension, writing and reflection. Students follow a step-by-step directed drawing tutorial using oil pastels to create a colorful shamrock inspired by Irish traditions and St. Patrick’s Day.

After the artwork is finished, students read about shamrocks and the holiday, answer comprehension questions, write a story about a lucky shamrock and reflect on their creative choices. It suits elementary classrooms, homeschool art lessons, literacy centers and sub plans.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students practice drawing and observation skills, reading comprehension, written responses and storytelling, creative thinking, and artistic reflection and self-assessment. The project shows them that art can tell stories and communicate ideas, and that thinking about their own process is part of making art.

Use it for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, March art lessons, art and literacy integration, sub plans, homeschool art, seasonal literacy centers or a bulletin board display.
