When you have a gorgeous skein that’s exploding with color, but you can’t figure out what to do with it - the Melted Crayons Cowl is the answer. The pattern adds symmetry, organization, and just a touch of contrast to bring out the best in variegated skeins. The Melted Crayons Cowl is also ideal for minis or scraps - work each strip in a different mini skein, or use scraps for a fun and super colorful cowl.

The cowl is made entirely out of variations of the single crochet, but the unique construction makes it an intermediate pattern.

Sample

Sample uses Oink Pigments Targhee Sock 400yds/100g in Basic Witch (color A), 80yds/20g in Zoot Soot Riot (Color B).

Thanks to Oink Pigments for providing the yarn for the pattern sample!

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The sample uses one full skein of fingering weight yarn as color A and a mini skein as color B. It’s specifically designed to highlight variegated skeins and would look amazing with a self-striping colorway, too. Solids, semi-solids, and tonals would provide a gorgeous but more subtle look.

Change up the look with a unique color layout! The cowl is perfect for mini skeins, with each strip made of a different mini. You can also use scraps - either one scrap per strip or combining scraps as needed until the strip is long enough.

Whatever color(s) you use as color A, make sure it contrasts well with color B.

The sample uses 80yds/20g for each strip, and 80yds/20g of the contrast color, but it’s super easy to adjust. The pattern includes simple yarn calculations for changing the number of strips, adjusting the width and length of each strip, and working the pattern with mini skein sets.

The cowl is easily adjustable so you can make it any weight from fingering to bulky and adjust the yardage as needed. You can add/remove strips and make the cowl wider/narrower as needed.

Size

The cowl can easily be adjusted to be taller/shorter or wider/narrower. You can also upsize it by working it with thicker weights of yarn. When worked as stated and gauge is met, the cowl measures 14”/36cm by 21”/53cm.
