The Five Federal Civilized Tribes Are US Citizens According To The Bureau of Indian Affairs

The primary federal agency that interacts with and handles federal services for the Five Civilized Tribes, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee aka Creek, Seminole Nations, is the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or the BIA. The BIA is a sub-agency housed within the U.S. Department of the Interior, or DOI.

Under U.S. law, federally recognized tribes are distinct, independent, political communities with inherent tribal sovereignty. They govern themselves, pass their own laws, and manage their own judicial systems.

The BIA's modern role is strictly to fulfil federal trust responsibilities, manage trust lands, and provide or fund public services (like education and law enforcement. Locally, the BIA coordinates closely with the tribes via the Eastern Oklahoma Region (formerly the Muskogee Area Office) which historically grew out of the consolidation of old federal agencies specific to these five nations.
