Kettle comes up the hill with an empty bucket. Pip's orange feet stop at the edge of the dark. Encouraging does not work. Coaxing does not work. A paw into the hole sends Pip further back. Kettle sits beside the opening, not over it, and sets his spoon down. After a long time Pip says the true thing. They walk the long way round, on foot.
