BENEATH THE SURFACE: CRAFTING SURREAL LITERARY NARRATIVES

Date: 24.03.2026

Time: 6 PM GMT

Duration: 2.5 hours (including a 15-minute Q&A at the end)

Beneath the skin invites writers to a two hour workshop exploring strange and surreal literary fiction. For writers who are excited by uncanny details, surreal imagery and fragmented realities, we’ll be developing fiction that lingers, surprises and unsettles, and uncovering our characters’ everyday strangeness. Through writing exercises and discussion, we’ll explore surreal imagery, subtle distortions of reality, and find ways to stretch your narrative beyond the ordinary.

For fans of transgressive literary fiction from the likes of Julia Armfield, Sophie Mackintosh, Ottessa Moshfegh, Daisy Johnson and more, we’ll uncover the stories, worlds and characters that shimmer just beneath the surface.

Your guide: Cumbrian dwelling in the North East. Writer of folktales and fables. Lucy Rose’s fiction and non-fiction have been published by Dread Central, Mslexia, The Observer, The Nerd Daily and more, and her films have visited BAFTA- and Oscar-qualifying film festivals internationally. She is also a Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe class of 2025. Lucy’s Sunday Times Bestselling debut novel, The Lamb, is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in the UK and HarperCollins in the US. Lucy lives on the north-east coast of England with her black cat, Figgy, and is currently working on her next story.
