The novel builds to its climax around a real historical event: the Loving-Richason gunfight at the Long Branch Saloon, March 1879 — one of the defining moments of Dodge City’s frontier era. The setting is meticulously researched. The streets, the saloons, the people — all of it is as close to the historical record as fiction allows.
