World War II: A 36-Week Home Education History Course
A complete 36-week World War II history course designed especially for home education.
Take your learner on a chronological journey from the aftermath of the First World War and Hitler’s rise to power, through the major events and human experiences of World War II, to the defeat of Germany and Japan and the world that emerged afterwards.
Designed for learners aged approximately 12+, with no upper age limit, the course can be adapted to suit different abilities and learning styles. No specialist knowledge is needed to teach it.
Rather than simply reading and answering endless questions, learners are encouraged to investigate history for themselves. Research is deliberately manageable, with a mixture of short enquiries, historical sources, maps, timelines, discussion, personal stories and practical or creative activities.
The course includes:
• 36 complete lessons
• Approximately 60–90 minutes per lesson
• A broadly chronological journey through World War II
• Short, manageable research tasks
• Historical enquiries and source work
• Discussion and critical-thinking questions
• Maps and timeline activities
• Personal stories and civilian experiences
• Practical and creative activities
• Recommended resources for further exploration
• Optional film recommendations
• Guidance for parents and home educators
• Content guidance for sensitive subjects
The course explores not only battles and military events, but also the experiences of children, evacuees, women, civilians, persecuted groups, resistance movements, refugees and people from across the Commonwealth and wider world.
It can be followed at approximately one lesson per week for a full academic year, worked through more quickly, or dipped into according to your learner’s interests.
