Years ago, I improvised a set of fingerless mitts while on a road trip. Originally, I had intended them to be socks, but halfway through I decided to drop in a quick thumbhole and finish them off as fingerless mitts instead.

Those improvised chevron mitts are the ones I reach for over and over again, particularly while I’m reading in bed and need to ward off the cold air on my hands. Knitted in fingering weight yarn, they are warm and cozy indoors or out, without being bulky and hot. When it came time to work on a new design, I knew I had to revisit and upgrade my favorite mitts.

Use fingering weight or sport weight yarn to knit fingerless or full mitten versions of the Night Mitts pattern. Each mitt is ambidextrous, so no worrying about making separate left and right. The fabric is very forgiving and fits hand circumferences from 5.5” (Size 1 relaxed) to 12” (Size 4 comfortably stretched).

Finished Sizes:

The cuff is 4” as written, but can be knitted longer.

Size 1 – Hand circumference 5.5” relaxed -7.5” comfortably stretched/15 cm relaxed -19 cm comfortably stretched

Size 2 – Hand circumference 6.75” relaxed -9” comfortably stretched/18 cm relaxed -25.4 cm comfortably stretched

Size 3 – Hand circumference 7.75” relaxed -10.5” comfortably stretched/20.5 cm relaxed - 11.2 cm comfortably stretched

Size 4 – Hand circumference 8.75” relaxed -12” comfortably stretched/22.2 cm relaxed – 30.5 cm comfortably stretched

Yarn and Yardage Estimates:

Self-striping, variegated, speckled, tonal or semisolid are all good color options. I recommend wool, wool blend, or acrylic yarn with good recovery.
