Recruit Yourself
RECRUIT YOURSELF: THE ATHLETE ACTION PLAN
Your future doesn’t start senior year. It starts with a plan.
Getting recruited to play college sports takes more than talent. It takes preparation, organization, communication, consistency, and action.
Recruit Yourself: The Athlete Action Plan is a 10-page interactive recruiting guide and action plan created for high school athletes in grades 9–12.
It helps athletes understand what to do, when to do it, how to contact coaches, how to follow up, and how to stay organized while creating their own recruiting opportunities.
WHY I CREATED RECRUIT YOURSELF
This became personal for me.
My son came to me stressed and in tears because he felt like he was running out of time to find a college where he could continue playing.
For about a year, I had been telling him he needed to get serious, stop putting things off, and start working on the recruiting process.
But seeing him overwhelmed changed something in me.
As his father, I realized:
I couldn’t just keep telling him what he needed to do. I needed to help SHOW him how to do it.
That hit me even harder because I had been that young athlete too.
Then I started thinking about the thousands of high school athletes trying to figure out their next move—and the parents who want to help but may not know where to begin.
Four days later, Recruit Yourself: The Athlete Action Plan was created.
I created something I wish my son and I had started with earlier—and something I wish I had when I was his age.
THEN WE PUT THE PLAN INTO ACTION
We didn’t just create the plan. My son started using it.
He began contacting college coaches instead of waiting for coaches to find him.
After contacting just 5 coaches, he received an opportunity to attend a college tryout—and this all happened within 7 days.
Every athlete’s recruiting journey is different, and results are never guaranteed. But our experience showed us something important:
TAKING ACTION CAN CREATE OPPORTUNITIES.
That is exactly what Recruit Yourself was built to help athletes do.
WHAT’S INSIDE THE 10-PAGE ACTION PLAN
✔ UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS
Learn what college coaches look for and what athletes need to start doing.
✔ THE 4-YEAR BUILD — 9TH–12TH GRADE
Follow a grade-by-grade recruiting plan:
Develop → Perform → Get Seen → Create Opportunities
✔ BUILD YOUR 30–50 COLLEGE LIST
Research schools, coaches, programs, divisions, locations, and opportunities—and build a realistic list of programs to pursue.
✔ CONTACT & FOLLOW-UP TRACKER
Track every coach you contact and stay organized with five follow-up opportunities so one unanswered call or message doesn’t end your effort.
✔ OPPORTUNITIES & PROGRESS TRACKER
Track camps, showcases, college visits, coaches, schools, improvement, and recruiting opportunities.
✔ COACH CONTACT ACTION PLAN
Don’t know what to say to a college coach?
This section walks athletes through:
CALL FIRST → TEXT SECOND → EMAIL LAST
Athletes receive:
✔ Example college coach call script
✔ Fill-in-your-own call script
✔ Voicemail script
✔ Example coach text message
✔ Space to build your own text message
✔ Example recruiting email
✔ Space to build your own email
✔ Coach Contact Tracker for calls, texts, emails, responses, follow-ups, and next actions
You’re not just being told to contact coaches. You’re being shown what to say and how to follow up.
✔ WHY GOOD PLAYERS GO UNNOTICED
Talent alone doesn’t guarantee that college coaches will find you.
Learn how limited scouting time, crowded showcases, pre-made recruiting lists, lack of proactivity, targeting the wrong level, failing to follow up, and starting too late can cause talented athletes to go unnoticed.
BEING GOOD IS NOT ENOUGH.
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE RIGHT PEOPLE KNOW YOU’RE GOOD.
✔ WHEN TO CONTACT COLLEGE COACHES
Knowing what to say is important. Knowing when and how to reach a coach matters too.
Athletes learn practical strategies for:
✔ Calling a coach’s school/office number
✔ Using morning office hours as a starting point when trying to reach coaches at their schools
✔ Handling a direct or cell number differently from an office number
✔ Knowing when to call, text, or email
✔ Asking a coach for their preferred day, time, and method of communication
✔ Trying different appropriate times and approaches because every coach has a different schedule and routine
✔ Setting aside dedicated recruiting time every week
✔ Following the system:
CALL → TEXT → EMAIL → FOLLOW UP
One unanswered call does not mean a coach isn’t interested. Coaches have practices, workouts, games, meetings, recruiting responsibilities, and different daily schedules.
Learn to adjust your approach, remain professional, and stay consistent.
✔ YOU’RE LEARNING MORE THAN RECRUITING
Recruiting also gives athletes an opportunity to start learning how to carry themselves on a college level.
Athletes practice how to:
✔ Make professional phone calls
✔ Introduce themselves with confidence
✔ Leave a proper voicemail
✔ Send professional texts and emails
✔ Communicate respectfully with adults
✔ Manage their time and keep appointments
✔ Follow up without becoming disrespectful or impatient
✔ Communicate with coaches, professors, and eventually employers
THESE ARE COLLEGE SKILLS. THESE ARE LIFE SKILLS.
Recruit Yourself doesn’t just prepare athletes to contact college coaches. It helps them develop communication, responsibility, independence, and professionalism that can carry beyond recruiting.
THIS ISN’T A BOOK YOU READ ONCE.
IT’S AN ACTION PLAN YOU WORK.
Research schools. Build your list. Contact coaches. Send your film. Track your conversations. Follow up. Attend camps and showcases. Add schools. Keep developing.
Your first 10 schools may not be your last 10.
Work through your 30–50 school list and continue creating opportunities.
