Start the year with creativity and structure using this New Year Directed Drawing set of 10 step-by-step drawing lessons for January art, the first week back after winter break, sub plans and classroom creative resets. It is best suited for Grades K to 5 and easy to adapt for upper elementary.
The drawings build student confidence while reinforcing line, shape, space, texture, color and composition. Students draw a Girl with Clock, Boy with Balloon, New Year Dinosaur, New Year Monster, Mouse, Turtle, Shark, New Year Bunny, New Year Cat and Bird, all with festive details like balloons, clocks, party hats and fireworks. They follow the steps, then personalize their work with their own coloring, backgrounds and details.

HOW TO USE IT
Print double-sided to make a booklet and place it in duotangs or bind it, or print single step-by-step pages and have students draw on blank paper. Review the lesson plan, demonstrate under a document camera or on the board, and guide students through each step. Students outline in black felt or fine liner, color with the medium of your choice, and the finished work makes a festive New Year bulletin board.
Directed drawing helps students build drawing confidence, fine motor control, visual sequencing, focus and listening, and shows them how complex images are built from simple shapes. It fits after-break routines, sub plans, fast finishers, morning work, art centers and sketchbook practice. Prep once and reuse it every January.
