Amritsar-The Golden City of India
Amrit means nectar or ambrosia and sarovar refers to a pool. The combination of these two words becomes Amritsar, The Pool of Immortality.
Amritsar city is one of the major cities in the state of Punjab in India.
The golden city of Amritsar is the most holy and religious place for the people of Sikh Community. It lies in the northwestern part of India and is the administrative headquarters of Amritsar district Langar in the state of Punjab, India.
According to the latest census, the population of the city is over 2,000,000, with that of the entire district numbering just over 3,695,077. Amritsar is situated 217 kilometers (135 mi) northwest of state capital Chandigarh and is 32 kilometers (20 mi) east of Lahore, Pakistan and therefore, very close to India's western border with Pakistan.
