The Sacred Fast
When spirit hungers more than flesh,
And prayer seeks Heaven's throne afresh,
We lay aside our daily bread
To feast on God's presence instead.
Like Moses on the mountain high,
Or Daniel when his help was nigh,
Like Esther facing destiny,
Through fasting, Lord, we seek to see.
Our bodies weak, our spirits strong,
Like Jesus in the desert long,
Not by bread alone we live,
But every word that God does give.
In prayer and fasting, two combined,
The spirit and the flesh aligned,
A deeper hunger satisfies
As earthly appetite denies.
Isaiah's fast breaks every chain,
Through sacrifice comes spiritual gain,
Not just from food do we abstain,
But seek the poor, the sick, the pained.
The Father sees in secret place,
Rewards with measures of His grace,
When heart and body both agree
To seek His face on bended knee.
So fast with wisdom, fast with prayer,
Let Scripture be your guide and care,
For when we seek with all our heart,
God's presence sets our fast apart.
