About the artwork

Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt was court physician to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague and an early naturalist. Around 1596–1610 he had natural-history watercolours made from life, including this red-capped fly agaric. The mushrooms stand on bare fabric, which keeps the stitch count low and the design crisp.
