Learning Preferences Questionnaire | Post-Primary

Help students explore how they prefer to learn and discover practical strategies that may support them across different subjects, tasks and learning situations.

This 7-page resource is designed for post-primary students and can be used as part of student support planning, individualised support, learning conversations, or to help students develop greater awareness of approaches that work well for them.

The resource begins with a 20-question, student-friendly questionnaire. Students respond to each statement using A lot like me, Sometimes like me, or Not really like me. There are no right or wrong answers.

The Scoring & Interpretation Guide allows staff to calculate scores across Visual, Auditory, Read/Write and Kinaesthetic preferences. The results can identify a student's strongest current learning preference or show that they may prefer a combination of approaches.

Importantly, the questionnaire explores learning preferences rather than fixed learning styles. A student's preferences may vary depending on the subject, task or situation, and the results are intended to help identify approaches that may support engagement and learning.

Following the questionnaire, students can be given the relevant learning preference page or pages. These provide practical strategies they can try in school, when studying and when revising, including visual supports, note-taking, flashcards, recording and listening back to notes, assistive technology, practical activities, movement, online quizzes and other active learning approaches.

The student pages also reinforce that a student may have more than one strong learning preference and that different strategies may work better for different subjects and tasks.

This resource can also be used alongside the Student Support File questionnaires to help build a broader picture of a student's strengths, preferences and support needs. The information gathered can support student-centred planning and meaningful conversations about approaches that may help the student learn.
