Small-Business Month-End Anti-Fraud Review Checklist
Closed books are not the same as owner-reviewed books.
The Small-Business Month-End Anti-Fraud Review Checklist gives an owner a focused, repeatable way to review completed monthly activity without redoing the bookkeeping. It is designed for the point after the normal month-end packet has been prepared, when the owner needs to look across the records, note anything unusual, and make sure unanswered questions have a named next step.
In one approximately 15-minute review, you will check:
• Bank and reconciliation activity
• Vendor, payee, and payroll changes
• Cards, reimbursements, and employee expenses
• Unusual, duplicate, late, or out-of-pattern transactions
• Evidence references, explanations, and open follow-up
The process keeps the review factual. A red flag is treated as a reason to look more closely—not proof of wrongdoing and not an accusation. The included tools help you record what you observed, what evidence you reviewed, who owns the next action, and whether the matter was closed or carried forward.

WHO IT IS FOR
This toolkit is built for owner-led small businesses, founders working with a part-time or outside bookkeeper, nonprofit officers, and small teams that receive prepared monthly records but do not yet have a consistent owner-review routine.
HOW TO USE IT
Prepare the usual month-end packet, complete the one-page review, record evidence references, ask neutral questions, assign follow-up, and close or carry forward each item. Repeat monthly so the process does not depend on memory.
This $49 toolkit handles the review of completed monthly activity. It does not replace the separate Syntera system for designing compensating controls around concentrated duties or the Bookkeeper Onboarding & Oversight Kit for managing a bookkeeper relationship.
IMPORTANT SCOPE
This is an operational review and documentation aid. It does not perform an audit, test every transaction, investigate suspected wrongdoing, certify financial statements or controls, provide legal, tax, accounting, HR, banking, or cybersecurity advice, or guarantee that fraud or error will be prevented or detected. If you suspect active theft or account compromise, contact the relevant financial institution or service provider promptly and seek appropriate professional or law-enforcement guidance.
