120 Bell Ringer Activities for 3rd Grade

Thank you for downloading! Here's everything you need to get these running smoothly in your classroom.

What's Inside

Six categories, 20 activities each — Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and SEL & Morning Meeting. That's enough variety to run a bell ringer every single school day for a full semester without repeating one.

Getting Started

  1. Print what you need. You don't have to print all 120 at once — print one category at a time, or print a week's worth (5 activities) as you go.
  2. Post it or hand it out. Display the day's prompt on your board, write it on an index card at each seat, or print and cut them into strips for a "pick one" jar. Whatever fits your routine.
  3. Set the expectation. These are designed to be completed independently in the first 5–10 minutes of class, while you take attendance, check folders, or handle morning logistics. No teacher instruction needed to start.
  4. Rotate through categories. A simple approach: one subject per day (Monday = Math, Tuesday = Reading, etc.), so students know what to expect and you get natural weekly variety. Or pick whatever fits that day's lesson focus.
  5. Keep a bell ringer notebook or folder. Many teachers have students keep responses in a dedicated notebook, folder, or stapled packet — this turns the whole set into a running record of daily practice you (or the student) can look back on.

Tips for Making the Most of This Resource

  • No materials required beyond paper and a pencil — a few prompts ask students to draw, so keep colored pencils or crayons handy if you'd like.
  • Great for early finishers, too — keep a stack accessible for students who complete other work early.
  • Works well as sub plans — the prompts are self-explanatory, so a substitute can hand them out with zero instructions needed.
  • Mix and match across categories if you want to focus more heavily on one subject during a particular unit (e.g., all Science prompts during your ecosystems unit).
  • Not sequential — activities within each category can be used in any order, so feel free to skip around based on what fits your day.
