In this Name Line Art Lesson, students turn their own name into a bold artwork while exploring the Element of Art: Line and the Principle of Design: Pattern. It is a personal, display-worthy project for back to school and the first week of school, and it works any time you want a line, pattern or mixed media name art lesson.

Students draw their name in bubble or box letters with a crown on the first initial and dripping goo below, then fill large background sections with zen doodle line patterns. A wax resist and felt marker painting process gives the finished piece a bright, polished look. It suits teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers, from elementary to middle school.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “This art activity was absolutely perfect for our Open House! I loved how it incorporated the students’ names—it made each piece feel so personal and special. My students were so proud of their artwork, and it added such a warm and welcoming touch to our classroom walls. The directions were clear, and the project was easy to prep and manage, even with a full class. The final results were beautiful, and I received so many compliments from families during Open House. It was a great way to showcase student creativity while also helping them with fine motor skills and personal expression. This is definitely a resource I’ll be using again next year. Thank you for creating something that’s both meaningful and visually impressive!” Marcella M.

HOW TO USE IT

The tutorial walks students through sketching their name, building the letters, adding a crown and line details, drawing a thick border and dripping goo, dividing the background and filling it with line patterns. They color the name with crayon, use white crayon in the border for wax resist, trace the patterns with water-based felt marker and use a paintbrush and water to make the marker bleed like paint, then color the goo black so the name pops.

Students practice line, pattern, shape, space, texture, color, form, value, composition and craftsmanship. You will need a pencil, eraser, water-based felt markers, black marker or Sharpie, card stock or watercolor paper, crayons including white, a paintbrush and water. The class set makes a bright bulletin board display.
