This lacy hat is inspired by the podcast Caithness Craft Collective hosted by Louise Hunt. Louise tirelessly records and produces a wonderfully informative and entertaining podcast every fortnight. The first Caithness Craft Collective retreat was in 2015. This pattern is offered to the attendees of the second Caithness Craft Collective 2016 retreat at John O’Groats, the northernmost village in Scotland.
John O’Groats takes its name from Jan de Groote. De Groote maintained a ferry from the Scottish mainland to Orkney. The John O’Groats House Hotel was established in 1875 on or near the site of Jan de Groot’s house. The renovated hotel reopened in 2013 after falling into disrepair and closure for many years. The building is characterized by its octagonal shape. It is believed the octagonal shape was designed to accommodate the eight heads of the de Groote family at a large octagonal table in the central room so there would be no head of the table and all were equal in status.
The eight points on the crown represent the John O’Groats House and its distinctive octagonal structure. The hat brim continues in rolling waves just as the ocean waves wash in on the shores just outside the cozy rooms of the John O’Groats House.
A ‘gabhail tlachd! (Enjoy!)
