About This Resource
Louisiana’s Grade 5 Social Studies standards are broad, and figuring out exactly what students need to know can be challenging—especially for teachers who are new to the grade level. This Crack the Test Co. unit helps teachers unpack Standards 5.9a–5.9e and plan backward from the knowledge and skills students are expected to demonstrate.
Medieval Europe: Power, Faith, Land & Law focuses specifically on the first half of Standard 5.9. Students work with maps, short sources, historical evidence, and LEAP-style questions while learning how geography, religion, political organization, economic systems, and law shaped Medieval Europe.
Students review the Alps, Atlantic Ocean, North European Plain, English Channel, Ural Mountains, and Mediterranean Sea; the role of monasteries in preserving knowledge and spreading Christianity; Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire; feudalism and manorialism; and the significance of the Magna Carta, including limits on royal power, rule of law, and trial by jury.
The resource uses the Crack the Test Co. 5-Step Detective Method: READ THE CLUES, ANNOTATE, FIND EVIDENCE, ANALYZE, ELIMINATE & JUSTIFY. Practice includes maps, source analysis, multiple choice, multiple select, technology-enhanced style practice, true two-part questions, constructed response, task cards with self-check answer cards, complete teacher keys, and a copy/paste Google Forms setup guide.
