How can I build children’s confidence with ‘phonics’?

This fantastic workbook, designed to support young children learning the alphabet (letters and their sounds), makes the perfect addition to your phonics lessons as a parent at home or a teacher at school.

The first activity in the booklet involves circling all the 's' sounds. To make the most of this activity either read out the letters or get children to read them, so they're practising both letter and sound recognition. Remember that this workbook is part of our phase 1, set 1 letters and sounds lesson which you can find on youtube here.

The next activity focuses on initial sounds. Children have to work out which of the words begin with the letter 's'. To help children understand what each word means, there are helpful accompanying pictures.

After this, children will apply their knowledge of beginning writing to practice tracing 's'. They will then have a go at writing upper and lowercase Ss on their own.

Finally the children will apply their knowledge of 's' words to drawing and colouring activities, learning new vocabulary and strengthening fine motor skills at the same time.

The same sequence of activities is repeated for all 4 sounds; s, a, t, p.
