Learn to Read: Level 1: Book 1 Complete Collection - 21, 100% Decodable Stories

A comprehensive follow-on reader to Books A and B, covering the first 12 lessons of the Level 1 course:

CK, OO, EE, SH, CH, ND/NT, NK, TH, NG, ING, AR and OR. All in one convenient book.

Please consider: this book is also included in the Level 1: Book 1 Course alongside 2 video lessons per sound and activity packs to help develop reading and spelling skills. This pack is ideal for the less confident parent requiring more help, or the child needing a slower pace.

Level 1: Book 1 follows Book A and Book B, which should have been read first.

If you are confident teaching phonics, the book can stand alone; however, parents are advised to purchase the Reading Made Simple Level 1 teaching pack here, which includes the teacher's manual for 46 lessons (of which this book covers 13) and helpful flashcards and word lists for practice.

What is Reading Made Simple?

Reading Made Simple is a highly structured phonics programme designed to make learning to read clear, logical, and accessible for all learners. Based on carefully sequenced phonetic word families, the programme has been developed to support children and adults who need a more systematic approach to literacy learning.

It is increasingly used by:

  • parents teaching at home
  • home educators
  • schools
  • special educational needs teachers
  • teachers of English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Reading Made Simple is particularly effective for learners who:

  • are struggling with conventional phonics programmes
  • find reading or spelling difficult
  • need concepts broken down into smaller steps
  • have failed to make expected progress in school

The programme is suitable for all ages and abilities, from early readers to older struggling learners, and is designed to build confidence through clear structure, repetition, and mastery. Whatever your starting point, Reading Made Simple can help make literacy truly accessible.

About This Book

This is part of an exciting, Science of Reading-aligned structured literacy curriculum that takes a child from beginner reader to fluency.

Please note: these are not typical 'word-stuff' decodables but rather part of a highly structured reading programme that introduces words naturally into stories alongside previously learned words. If you want 'word-stuff' decodables, please do not buy this book.

Inside This Resource

  • 19 sequential decodable stories in PDF form, with systematic vocabulary control
  • Word practice lists at the start of each story
  • Fully decodable content - plus a few gently introduced sight words
  • Relatable farm-themed content that engages young learners
  • Charming watercolour artwork in a nostalgic style
  • Reader-friendly formatting with large, clear font and generous spacing for easy tracking
  • Research-based approach following the Science of Reading principles
  • Print-ready, 140 A4 pages - just print and put them into a folder. For extra protection for school use, you can insert pages into plastic slips.

What Makes Reading Made Simple Different?

I have worked hard to create genuinely engaging stories while maintaining strict vocabulary limitations—something rare in early phonics materials. Not only is the vocabulary strictly decodable, but the words are also met again and again, helping every child develop the needed word recall for reading fluency.

The goal is natural-sounding narratives, not to promote picture-guessing, but rather to provide an alternative to the tedious phonics 'drill' approach so prevalent at this reading stage.

Strict decodability: Every story contains only decodable words that students can sound out, plus the few, well-practised sight words. The illustrations enhance enjoyment without encouraging word-guessing—a fundamental principle of Science of Reading methodology.

Strategic vocabulary management: New words appear gradually in each story while familiar vocabulary recycles across all narratives in the curriculum. This planned repetition develops both fluency and confidence. Young readers feel successful when they recognise words they have encountered before, naturally building automatic word recognition.

Ideal For

  • Students with basic CVC and CCVC/CVCC blending
  • Developing fluency through decodable reading materials
  • Small reading groups or one-on-one instruction
  • Kindergarten through early first grade (ages 4-6)
  • Classrooms implementing the Science of Reading practices

Learning Objectives

Students will practice and develop:

  • Blending with 10 essential phonics patterns
  • Reading fluency through systematic vocabulary repetition
  • Phonics application within authentic story contexts
  • Comprehension monitoring by checking if decoded words make sense
  • Sight word automaticity with a, the, is, of, I, to, go, no, he, she, be, me, we, and, too, two, give, have, live, here, says. they, are, come and put
  • Phonics pattern recognition: words with like blends are listed together in the practice section

Implementation Guide

Before Reading: Teachers guide students through the word list at each story's beginning. This includes both decodable words and sight words (marked as 'odd words'). This helps the pupil to read fluently.

During Reading: Support students in sounding out unfamiliar words rather than guessing from pictures or context.

After Reading: Acknowledge each completed story as an achievement.

Ongoing: Monitor how fluency improves as repeated vocabulary appears across stories. If progress stalls, students may benefit from additional phonics work with the relevant sound pattern.

Story Length: Each narrative is brief enough to complete in a single session, maintaining engagement while providing ample decoding practice.
