Loneliness is not a character flaw. It is often a sign that the conditions for friendship have thinned.

About 94 hours.

In one American study of recent movers, that is when a new acquaintance tipped into a casual friend. A good friend took about 219.

Count the unclaimed hours in your last month.

Two young women are walking in an autumn forest. One stops to lift a stray leaf out of her friend's braids. Now look at what the picture leaves out: a free afternoon they both had at once, and a trail that charges nothing. Friendship is the freest choice we make. So why does it slip away from so many people who want it?

⏳ Closeness follows chosen time. For the adults studied, hours together at work or school were linked to less closeness, and hours hanging out to more.

🌲 Friendship needs places that do not charge admission. Where lingering requires a purchase, friendship tends to get sorted by income.

🚪 It also needs permission to be yourself. In early 2024, Statistics Canada found 27% of LGBTQ2+ people always or often lonely, about double the national rate.

📉 The "friendship recession" is a signal, not a verdict. Its best-known U.S. figures set a 2021 online survey against a 1990 telephone poll.

🧱 No government and no app can hand you a friend. A society can secure the floor underneath: time, free public places, transit and safety.

The article concedes the strongest objection: "just reach out" is sound advice, and somebody has to send the first message. Includes a one-page Hours, Places, Permission audit and a circle prompt.

For anyone whose friendships thinned after a move, a new job, a retirement or a coming-out, and who was told to try harder. Also for teachers and organizers who run the places where people meet.
