Public WiFi Safety Card: Use Free WiFi Without Handing Over Your Data

Who Else Is On This WiFi?

• Two networks are both called "Airport Free WiFi," and you're not sure which one is real.
• Your phone joins open networks without asking.
• You checked your bank account from a café.
• AirDrop is open to everyone around you.
• You've heard you should use a VPN but aren't sure when or how.
• The hotel WiFi is shared with hundreds of strangers.

Public WiFi is convenient, but you don't control it. Fake hotspots can be set up to look like the real network, and devices that auto-join open networks can connect to them without you noticing.

The Public WiFi Safety Card shows you how to connect more safely, what to avoid on public networks, and when to switch to something safer. It covers hotel, airport and café WiFi on one page you can check before you connect.

What's inside:

✅ Before You Connect: confirm the real network name with staff, turn on your VPN if you use one, and forget the network when you leave.

✅ What Not To Do: avoid sensitive logins on untrusted networks, never enter passwords on non-https sites, and turn off AirDrop and file sharing.

✅ Safer Alternatives: use your phone's hotspot or mobile data for banking and other sensitive tasks.

✅ Settings To Check: turn off auto-connect to open networks, switch off Bluetooth when you're not using it, and turn on your laptop's firewall.

✅ Pro Tip: how and when a reputable VPN adds a layer of protection when you travel.

Who it's for:

• Frequent and business travelers
• Remote workers and digital nomads
• Students on campus WiFi
• Café regulars and commuters
• Anyone who uses free public networks

Why it works: It's one page and takes seconds to check. It's small enough to keep in a laptop bag.
