Identifying Feelings & Emotions Cards With Pictures | SEL Emotion Task Cards
Help students move beyond simply naming an emotion and begin reading facial expressions, noticing body clues, identifying feelings, and understanding what might happen next with these Identifying Feelings & Emotions Cards With Pictures.
Using real-life photos of children and adults, these emotion task cards give students clear visual examples of emotions and everyday social situations. Students look closely at each picture, identify how the person may be feeling, notice clues in their face and body, and build their understanding of emotions through structured visual prompts.
The pack includes two differentiated levels, making it easy to use with students who are just beginning to recognize basic emotions as well as learners who are ready for more advanced social-emotional thinking.
Perfect for special education, autism support, speech therapy, counseling, SEL lessons, ELL/ESL learners, morning meetings, social skills groups, calm corners, and one-on-one intervention.
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
This resource includes 45+ printable pages/cards featuring a wide range of real-life photographs and emotional situations.
LEVEL 1 – IDENTIFYING EMOTIONS
Level 1 provides highly visual, scaffolded emotion identification practice.
Students are prompted to:
- Look at a real-life photograph and answer “How does she/he feel?”
- Examine illustrated facial expressions for additional visual clues
- Identify how the person's body feels
- Sort or identify the emotion according to LOW, CALM, BUSY, or BIG FEELINGS
- Look closely at facial features and other visual clues
- Notice the mouth, eyes, body, and other physical signs
- Record or discuss their observations using the structured response area
These cards are ideal for students who benefit from clear visuals, repeated language, predictable routines, and explicit emotion instruction.
LEVEL 2 – EMOTIONS, BODY CLUES & SOCIAL SITUATIONS
Level 2 increases the challenge by asking students to interpret the photograph and think more deeply about the situation.
Students work on questions and prompts including:
- How does he/she feel?
- Selecting from emotion choices
- How does his/her body feel?
- Identifying the intensity or type of feeling
- What clues do you see?
- Looking at clues from the face, body, and actions
- What could he/she do next?
- Considering appropriate responses, actions, or coping choices
Level 2 also introduces more complex photographs and real-life social situations, including children interacting with others, experiencing frustration, working, playing, arguing, helping, comforting, worrying, celebrating, and responding to everyday challenges.
This allows students to practice not only emotion recognition, but also social awareness, perspective taking, emotional regulation, body language, and social problem-solving.
REAL PHOTOS FOR REAL EMOTION LEARNING
Recognizing an illustrated happy or sad face is one thing. Recognizing those emotions when they appear on a real person's face and body is a much more meaningful skill.
The photographs throughout this resource expose students to different people, ages, facial expressions, body positions, actions, and social situations.
Use the cards to encourage discussions such as:
What do you notice about their face?
What is their body doing?
What might have happened?
How strong is this feeling?
What could they do next?
There isn't always one tiny, perfectly wrapped answer—and that's exactly where some fantastic SEL conversations can happen!
