Messing around with stitch patterns while knitting a swatch for a larger item, I found I had pretty much made a short loop cowl. Once I got started, I couldn’t stop myself, DK, Aran, Bulky and Super Bulky versions soon followed. The pattern is written so that you can use ANY weight of yarn, with suggested stitch counts and estimated yarn used for short, medium and long loop cowls.
Yarn
4ply/fingering
DK
Aran
Bulky/Chunky
Super Bulky/Chunky
Needles
6,5mm for chunky/bulky yarn
5.5mm for Aran yarn
4mm for DK yarn
4mm for 4ply / fingering yarn
10mm for super bulky/chunky yarn
Suggested needle sizes for various weights of yarn are included but you should select a needle size that gives you the drape and finished fabric that you want, not what the ball band says.
Sizes:
Short Loop: 22-26 inches - or desired length
Medium Loop: 43-48 inches - or desired length
Long Loop: 54-66 inches - or desired length
Required Skills
Basic Knit, Purl, YO, simple decreases, Sl, wyif, wyib, cast on, cast off/bind off, weave in ends.
About the pattern
The cowl is knitted sideways, starting with a provisional cast on or you can just use a standard longtail cast on if you prefer. Then joined later either by Kitchener Stitch graft or a Three Needle Bind off/Cast off on the inside of the cowl.
You should be able to stash bust (or treat yourself if you prefer) and knock up some great gifts either for yourself or someone knitworthy.
The cowl pattern has options for a short loop, medium loop and long loop versions and includes suggested stitch counts for a variety of weights of yarns from 4ply/fingering up to super bulky.
There are two stitch patterns to choose from, you can use just one or both if you like. They are both reversible. The pattern is charted and also has written instructions for those who don’t like charts :)
